CREATIVITY IN THE EXAM CLASSROOM: Hands-on activities for the 4 skills

Is an ELT teacher, translator/subitler and oral examiner. She holds a BA in English Language and Literature from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece and an MA in Audiovisual Translation from the University of Surrey, UK. She has contributed to publications, written articles for ELT journals, presented workshops in TESOL conventions and is currently the Vice Chair and Editor in Chief of TESOL Macedonia – Thrace, Northern Greece. She’s passionate about creating learning spaces in which her students can enhance their creativity and critical thinking skills. When she’s not teaching, she can be found singing, cooking or blogging – apart from her own site, she blogs for the British Council Teaching English site as well.

It is a hands-on workshop designed for foreign language professionals in Greece - teachers at public and foreign language schools, private lessons teachers, directors of studies, school owners.

How can we think and teach outside the exams’ box? In this hands-on workshop, we will look into the ways different exam skills are related to the development of a critical, creative mind and attempt to define what constitutes a «creative approach» to teaching for the exams. After demonstrating creativity’s role in our classes, a variety of hands-on tasks will be presented on the four skills often assessed in exams – Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. We will explore how existing exam tasks can be adapted as well as how we can design our own creative learning materials. Workshop participants will be given the opportunity to work in groups, try the activities themselves and gain skills which they could use to add a touch of authenticity to their exam-prep classes.
