MOTIVATING LEARNERS AND LEARNER AUTONOMY

Maria Heron has been working as a teacher, teacher trainer and materials writer for over thirty years. She has trained teachers in the UK, Argentina, Chile, Western Europe, Kazakhstan and Canada. She is CELTA Centre Manager at NILE and has set up a CELTA centre at ICBC in Santiago de Chile and delivered CELTA courses in Almaty, Kazakhstan and Perm, Russia. She is also a CELTA assessor and a Delta tutor and gives presentations at international conferences. She completed her MA at NILE in collaborative partnership with the University of Chichester. She is on the advisory board of Folio. Her chief ELT interests are materials development and the role of affect in language learning.

It is a hands-on workshop designed for foreign language professionals in Greece - teachers at public and foreign language schools, private lessons teachers, directors of studies, school owners.

In this three-hour workshop we will discuss practical strategies and ideas that can trigger our learners’ motivation, create an engaging environment and promote learning. We will also reflect on how to help our students become autonomous learners so that motivation extends beyond the classroom. This practical, hands-on workshop will equip teachers with ideas, materials and activities for immediate application in their own contexts, with a focus on teenage and adult learners of English.
